custom turbo for mustang?

i want to turbo my 1996 mustang v6 3.8 mustang. I found a kit online for 1500. Just want to know if this would be a good idea and what else I would need to put it on.

Looking to get 400 HP from a little 6 banger. It's possible but you must do more to the engine and car if you want it to last more than a couple of passes down the quarter mile.

First off this is a 15 year old car with a 15 year old engine, 15 year old transmission, 15 year old drive shaft, and 15 year old differential. If these are all factory original they will not be up to the task. Things are going to break and break hard. The engine, transmission, drive shaft, and differential need to be overhauled or upgraded before you even think about adding the turbocharger.

Consider this scenario. You add the turbo kit only but fail to upgrade the engine and the rest of the drive-line. You take your freshly turbocharged Mustang out on its maiden voyage. You pull up to a light. A mid 90's Z/28 pulls up along side you and revs the engine a couple of times. You start to drool because you are about to have fresh Camaro for lunch. You start to give your Mustang a little gas to spool up the turbo for launch. The light turns green. You put your right foot to the floor and slip your other foot off of the clutch. You hear a loud bang and go nowhere. Steam and smoke are starting to come from under the hood, fluids are coming out the bottom. Time for a tow truck. How embarrassing.

The stock cast crankshaft, rods, and pistons won't be up to the task. You will need to find a forged crankshaft, rods, and pistons. Also, when selecting your pistons you will want some turbocharger friendly ones. These usually have a smaller dome that will lower the compression ratio down to about 8.5:1 to reduce the detonation problems you will be constantly fighting under boost. With lower compression pistons you will be able to run the engine on premium 92 octane pump gas instead of hard to find and expensive racing fuel.

The rest of your 6 banger drive line won't be up to the task either. You may want to use the transmission and rear end from a Mustang GT. These are built to handle V8 power and should be good up to 400 HP.

Personally I think you would be better off selling this 6 banger mustang and getting a GT. There is much more potential with the V8. And you will find far more aftermarket goodies for the V8 than you will the 6 banger. You will literally get more bang for the buck hopping up a V8 Mustang.
